Not to crash a pity-party (and oh, I've had plenty of them for QuickBooks integration), but I want to point you towards the tools I have available at http://behindlogic.com:

1) HTTP Connector - a simple, fast, mini webserver to run on Windows alongside QuickBooks, that opens up the SDK to the network via HTTP. Instead of being forced to run your app on Windows or use one of Intuit's less-than-desirable connection tools, this allows you to easily send QBXML over HTTP and get the responses back as if QuickBooks is now a website with an API.

2) QuickBooks Rubygem - Makes the QB SDK available like ActiveRecord does for databases. Forget about the painful learning of QBXML and work in 100% Ruby. Combine with the HTTP Connector for a perfect way to integrate your Rails app on Linux with QuickBooks.

Unfortunate disclaimer: I'd like to provide them for free, but together they took months to perfect, so I do have a price on them. Hopefully it's in your range. :)
